Doing laundry, old school-style

Here in South Australia, using a clothes dryer is not a very popular practice. Most people hang their laundry outside to dry on clothes lines, which seems rather old school to me. But, as you can see, I’ve adopted the practice. (That’s me, on Christmas day, doing some laundry, in the above photo.) In this hot dry climate, there is no real need to use a machine to dry one’s clothes–that seems to be the philosophy here. Honestly, I tend to disagree. Some fabrics do not respond well to being hung on the line to dry, I’m discovering. Natural fabrics may stretch, fade, or wrinkle (often, a combination of two of these effects happens). What this technique works well for is towels, sheets, and polyester clothing. I’m experimenting with hanging some items on a small rack in the laundry room, and laying some things flat to dry. I’ll work it out. At least I’m getting some fresh air, while hanging the laundry outside–and our sheets smell wonderful.
